POSTPONED: "Without Water, Life Would Be Pretty Dry" Poster Contest

(UPDATE: March 19, 2020, 8:30 a.m.): The health and safety of our community are our highest priority. Given this week's shelter-in-place guidance from the Alameda County Public Health Department, the Without Water, Life Would Be Pretty Dry poster contest has been postponed until next school year. Updated contest dates will be shared with schools and families as soon as they are finalized.

We encourage students to still explore the importance of water conservation while sheltering-in-place. Below are some activities and lesson plans parents/guardians can use at home:

Thank you for your support of our water education programs.

Livermore’s 3rd – 5th graders are invited to enter the Annual Water Awareness Poster Contest, sponsored by Livermore Municipal Water, California Water Service Company (Cal Water), and Zone 7 Water Agency. The theme for this year’s contest is Without Water, Life Would Be Pretty Dry.

Livermore’s water agencies believe that it is critical for students to learn about the importance of water early on. We hope that this contest will inspire students to think about the many ways they use water day-to-day and what would happen if this resource was suddenly unavailable. To assist students with this year’s contest theme, participants will be given free water educational materials to inspire their artwork.

The winning posters will be displayed at the Livermore Downtown Street Fest and the Livermore Civic Library in honor of May, which is Drinking Water Awareness Month. Contest winners will be invited to a Livermore City Council meeting where they will receive awards and prizes. The contest winners’ classrooms will also receive an ice cream party.

How to Register for the Contest

This contest is open to students who are enrolled at a Livermore school or are Livermore residents. Teachers and principals can register their classroom or school for the contest. If your child’s classroom is not participating as a group but your child would still like to enter, they can register as an individual entry.

Confirm that your school, classroom, or child is participating in the contest by March 18th by contacting Natalie Croak at or (925) 960-8144. If you are registering a school or classroom, you will need to provide the names of participating teachers and the total number of posters your school will need for the contest.

Contest Judging

Staff from the City of Livermore, Cal Water, and Zone 7 Water Agency will select finalists for 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade. Finalists’ posters will then be put online, and the community will have the opportunity to vote for the winning artworks. If a student from your school is selected as a finalist, it is a great opportunity to rally school spirit and encourage your students to vote for their classmate! After the community votes, first, second, and third place awards will be presented for each grade level.
